…but nothing happened, not a sound.

I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You. Job 42:2

There is a popular children’s book about a tiny, young cricket who tries his best to chirp a greeting to those he meets along the way. However, with each passing encounter, the little cricket’s efforts remain fruitless. Nevertheless, he perseveres in hope as he moves onward and forward to the next opportune meeting. But each time, try as he might, nothing happened…not a sound.

I confess that at times, I feel a lot like this tiny cricket when it comes to one of my long awaited unanswered prayers. I move onward and forward, continually laying this request at Jesus’ feet and when I come to what seems like an opportune moment, I hold out the hope that maybe this time the Lord will finally answer this much longed for prayer. However, I soon realize it isn’t yet to be. Nothing happened, not a sound.

The enemy inevitably swoops in during these ‘not-a-sound’ moments and throws discouragement my way. Sometimes it hits its mark, but even when it does, I refuse to let discouragement take hold for any length of time, for Satan is a Liar and a Thief. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10 Instead, I speak out the truth of Who God is- He is Faithful and True. Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. Revelation 19:11

God is trustworthy and helps us through those times when we can’t see His loving hand working behind the scenes in our life, when it looks like nothing is happening….

Not a sound.

You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You winnow my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Psalm 139:1-2

The children’s book ends with the tiny, young cricket meeting another quiet little cricket. He gives one last hoped for effort and this time….the beautiful song of a little cricket floats through the air.

I believe with all my heart, that one day in God’s perfect timing, I too will hear the melody of my long awaited prayer coming to fruition.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12
